PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Media Relations Intern

During the 2017 Major League Baseball season, I worked as a media relations intern for the Pittsburgh Pirates. My main responsibility was to assist the PR department with all game-day related activities such as delivery of game notes and lineups, compiling of statpacks, and set-up of the press box.  During the game, I was responsible for researching stats (using Statspass, Baseball Reference, etc.) and communicating them to our in-game radio and television broadcasters to be used on the air. I also played a large role in the 2017 MLB Draft by researching and helping write the Pirates' 2017 Draft Bios, which is just one example of the written work I completed during my internship.  Throughout the season, I had the opportunity to work as an in-game statistician for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres. This was my first internship in media relations, but I immediately fell in love with the diverse role and could see myself working in this field in the very near future.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Media Relations Intern

After my internship with the Pirates, I realized my growing liking for media relations and knew I wanted to pursue it again in some capacity.  That's when I found the Pittsburgh Penguins and in August 2017, I began a media relations internship with the back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions. Each game-day, I was responsible for setting up the media level, compiling and delivering game-by-game statistics, and recording player/coach interviews. I also made and issued media credentials for each home game and assisted in writing press releases and game notes that were distributed to the media following the game. Even though my internship ended in January 2017, I was invited back to work the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs - an experience I will never forget. In my time at the Penguins, I was able to learn more about the interworkings of a sports media relations department as well as build on my writing abilities as a public relations professional.
